Camp can be compared to running a theatre company that will perform a production for a limited amount of time. In essence, this is what we do each summer. Therefore, it’s important to ensure that all programming has been reviewed, rehearsed and ready to receive campers upon their arrival. During pre-camp all of the staff will meet for special training and for team building in preparation for the role they will perform as a member of the camp staff. Our pre-camp staff training consists of on-line video training, instructor led training and CPR and First Aid certification. All of the staff training and meetings are mandatory.
All staff is required to work every day for the time period outlined on your employment contract unless pre-arranged exceptions be made with the Camp Executive Director prior to signing your employment contract.
At Camp Joharie we have an Executive Director, a Camp Director, a Site Director and four Program Directors. Counselors must be a minimum of 18 years old. Our camper to counselor ratio is 8:1 for 7/8 year-olds, 10:1 for 9/10 year-olds and 12:1 for 11/12 year olds. Each counselor has a pod of campers and travels together in larger groups of counselors with children of the same age group with their respective counselors. Each counselor is personally responsible for his or her 6 to 12 children every day for the entire week. Supporting the counselors are the specialists, directors, and administration that provide the structure and program activities throughout the day.
